Coffee and CBD: A Winning Combination

Thanks to the changing legal status of cannabis across much of the United States, products that deliver the medicinal properties of this miracle plant without the psychoactive or intoxicating effects are becoming increasingly more widely available. And we all know how baristas are – give them a new potential ingredient, and they’ll figure out some way to make it taste amazing in coffee!

If you’re wondering what exactly CBD oil is and what it does, you are not alone. CBD is a naturally occurring compound found in cannabis plants, to varying degrees. Thanks to cross-breeding and hybridization, cannabis growers have developed strains of the plant that contain high percentages of CBD without having any THC (the psychoactive compound found in cannabis). Research has shown that CBD has a tremendous variety of medicinal properties, helping people deal with everything from pain and inflammation to PTSD and opioid withdrawal.

The Basics: Trying Out CBD Oil in Your Morning Coffee

So the most basic way to try CBD oil in coffee is to head to a coffee shop (provided you live in a state with legal recreational cannabis), where you can order a professionally crafted CBD coffee drink. A slight step up from there requires you to make your own coffee and take a trip to a local cannabis dispensary for CBD oil. Add the CBD oil in whatever dosage you want (consult with your dispensary or read up on CBD to figure out what that is), and down the hatch.

Pretty straightforward, right? Unfortunately, not so much. CBD oil, like any other oil, doesn’t mix terribly well with water. Because of this simple fact, your CBD oil is more likely to stick to your cup then end up in your body with your coffee.

For this reason, getting the dosage right can be tricky, and using CBD coffee as a means of getting medicine into your body (especially if you are treating something serious with CBD under a doctor’s care) isn’t necessarily recommended. For most of us, roughly 15mg of CBD oil is a good starting point.

Adding Another Layer of Flavor

One way to get that health-supporting CBD oil into your body along with your favorite beverage is to suspend the oil in the water, making an emulsion of it. Making an emulsion out of two liquids that normally wouldn’t want to blend is as simple as mixing them together vigorously, using something like a blender, a milk frother, or a shaker bottle.

For extra points, you may want to consider adding something else to your beverage for flavor. Your favorite coffee additions, including things like cream, hot frothy milk, drinking chocolate, chili-spiked Mexican chocolate, honey, or salt, all blend well with CBD oil and all can work to bring your CBD latte game up to the professional level.

Coffee for Your Health

There is a tremendous amount of research out there that backs what coffee fans have known for years: coffee is good for you, and can support your health in a variety of ways. And now with the addition of CBD oil, you can get your coffee to support your health in new and more relaxing ways. Try CBD in your coffee and see if it’s for you!*
